Tora Bush Scenic Reserve

Located in the Wairarapa region

A 549 hectare restricted hunting area east of Aorangi Forest Park in the Greater Wellington region.

About this hunting block

General information

The Tora Bush Scenic Reserve is located 38 km south east of Martinborough. Access is by walking only, across private land.

Hunting opportunities are red and fallow deer, goats and pigs.

Access

Follow White Rock Road to a signposted entrance. The GPS point for parking is E1803599 N-5403963.

Follow the marker track across private land to get to the reserve.

Landowners will advised of permit holders each month – hunters don't need to contact them.

Huts

There are no huts in Tora Bush Scenic Reserve and camping isn't allowed. Day access only.

Terrain

Medium to steep terrain (440m) with an east to southeast aspect. The higher western ridge runs north–south.

The northern half is black beech forest with mixed broadleaf species. The southern part is regenerative scrubland with regenerated broadleaf in gullies.

Permit booking periods

There are two booking periods for Tora Bush Scenic Reserve:

  • 1 July to 31 October. Bookings for this period open 1 May.
  • 1 January to 30 June. Bookings for this period open 1 November.

Permits are issued for two weeks. Contact the Masterton DOC office to apply for a permit.
