General information

Karakariki Scenic Reserve is a small block of public conservation land surrounded by private forest (Maori land) on three sides and farm land on the other side. The terrain is rolling to steep hills low/midlands. The total area of Karakariki Scenic Reserve is 486 ha.

Hunting and dog access is restricted each year during the lambing period 1 August to 30 September.

Access

Turn off the Hamilton/Raglan Highway (SH23) into Karakariki Road and then turn left into Karakariki Valley Road to the car park at the road end.

Landholders

When hunting in Karakariki Scenic Reserve hunters must have a thorough understanding of the public conservation land boundary to avoid trespassing on the contiguous (unfenced) privately owned bush.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept under control and not used for hunting until well within the DOC hunting area.

Dogs are only permitted for hunting October-July and a Restricted permit is required. See 'Permits' below.

No dogs are allowed in the reserve from 1 August to 30 September each year to lower the risk of stock disturbance during the calving/lambing season.

Dogs must be kept on a lead while using public walking and farm access ways. Dogs should be kept on a lead at all times in riverbed areas and wetlands from October to the end of February while birds are nesting.

Permits October to July

To hunt without dogs apply for an Open permit. Visit Hunting Permits Online.
