The more significant reserves contained within the North Waikato hunting area include the Karakariki and Hakarimata Scenic Reserves and three sections of the Hapuakohe Range; the Hapuakohe Ecological Area, the Matahuru and Mangapiko Valley Scenic Reserves.
Feral goats are in relatively low numbers due to control by DOC and other agencies. Pigs are present in moderate numbers in the Hakarimata and Karakariki scenic reserves and the Hapuakohe reserves. Low numbers of red and fallow deer are present in some of these reserves.
Gamebird hunting is also popular in this area with it's many wetlands.

The Waikato is typically humid with potential for rapid changes in weather.
Stop kauri disease and protect kauri
- Scrub all soil off shoes and gear.
- Use cleaning stations.
- Always stay on the track.
