This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

About this hunting block

General information

Goats, possums and pigs are found in this reserve.

Permits are available online as 'Taranaki Forests' under the Central North Island hunting block.

This popular recreational hunting area features 6941 ha of steep broken hill country. Lake Rotorangi which runs through the centre of the reserve is a popular fishing, jet boating and water skiing site.

A mixed podocarp forest with manuka scrub and tree ferns covers the slopes, with some areas being logged in the past.

Kiwi and members of the parakeet species can be found in the area.

Access

Access is by boat above the Patea dam, or by four wheel drive along Meremere Road.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Dogs

Dogs are prohibited except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area need to get a permit from the local DOC office and have a current kiwi aversion certificate.

Avian awareness and avoidance training

To take dogs across private property, or tracks crossing farmland, you must get permission from the landowner.
