A 3,506 hectare hunting area in the Southland region.

Mid Dome is now an open hunting permit area

Mid Dome was previously covered by restricted hunting permits. In November 2025 the hunting area was moved into the open area hunting permit. All permits issued from November 2025 will include details for this hunting area.

Active open hunting permits issued before November 2025 that include the Lower South Island region will not show details for this hunting area, but hunting is authorised for the hunting area under these permits. See the special conditions that apply to hunting in this hunting area.

Red deer and pigs are present.

Access

Mid Dome Conservation Area is via Fiery Creek off Nokomai Road. 

Please ensure all cars are parked off the road and clear of gateways.

Landowners 

The Mid Dome Conservation area is surrounded by private land. You must be aware of land boundaries. Permission must be granted from adjoining landowners to cross private land. Trespassers will be prosecuted.

There are no DOC huts on in this area. 

Dogs

No dogs allowed via Fiery Creek foot access.

  • The terrain in this area is steep and challenging. 
  • Be aware that this area may be used by Wild Animal Recovery Operations (WARO) operators.  

Special conditions

Mid Dome is closed to hunting from 8 -12 December and 13 January - 28 February each year.
