This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

About this hunting block

General information

This block is part of the Rock and Pillar Conservation Area, which spans the Rock and Pillar Range between the Strath Taieri and the Upper Taieri.

A significant amount of tussock covers the block, while the tops have herb fields, cushion plants and large schist rock tors.

Access

Access is via State Highway 87, 7219 Hyde Middlemarch Road, 9 km north of Middlemarch from a carpark at Kinvara Station. The road is suitable for all vehicles to the car park. From here a 4WD is recommended to reach the hunting block boundary at the road end.

Although there is vehicle access to the block boundary, we recommend you contact the landholder for track conditions prior to access.

Hunting is not permitted on the access easement crossing private land.

Access is also available via the Old Dunstan Road off State Highway 87 from Outram. The road is suitable for all vehicles to the block boundary. Old Dunstan Road is only open to vehicles 1 October – 31 May.

There is no public access between the Rock and Pillar Conservation Area and the Western Rock and Pillar block.

Know before you go

Dog access

Dogs are allowed in this block.

Taking your dog across private land:

  • If accessing the block with your dog on foot, you must have landholder permission to cross. 
  • If accessing the block by vehicle, you do not need landholder permission as long as your dog stays inside your vehicle to cross.
