Introduction

The Maukaatua (Maungatua) hunting block lies to the west of the Taieri Plains. You can hunt pigs and red deer.

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Seasonal restrictions

Animals present are pigs and red deer.

General information

This block is part of the Maukaatua Range, the main geographic feature to the west of the Taieri Plains.

A significant amount of the area is covered in tussock grasslands and alpine scrub, while beech/tawhai forest, broadleaf and kānuka cover the lower parts of the area.

Access

There are two access points:

  • Via Woodside Road off State Highway 87, 2 km west of Outram. The road is suitable for all vehicles to the Woodside Glen picnic area; from here access to the hunting block is via the walking track.
  • Via Grainger Road off Maungatua Road, 7km southwest of Outram. The road is suitable for all vehicles to the road end gate; from here access to the hunting block is via the walking track.

Hunting is not permitted within Woodside Glen picnic area.

Know before you go

Dogs

Dogs are allowed in this block with a hunting permit. Dogs must be kept on a lead in Woodside Glen picnic area as this is a Dunedin City Council reserve.

If accessing the block over private land, you must have landholder permission to take your dog.
