Introduction

You can find red deer and pigs in the Careys Creek hunting block, which is part of the Silver Peaks Scenic Reserve north of Dunedin.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Seasonal restrictions

Before lighting a fire on public conservation land, check it's alright to light. Extinguish all fires before leaving huts and campsites. How to minimise the risk of fire.

Dog access

Animals present are goats and pigs.

General information

This area is part of the Silver Peaks Scenic Reserve and lies north of Dunedin.

A significant amount of the area is steep bush clad faces of kānuka, broadleaf and podocarp forest with a number of bluff systems throughout.

Access

There are two access points:

  • Via SH1 north of Dunedin to Double Hill Carpark – turn left just after Waitati, up Double Hill Road, which becomes Semple Road. The access is marked with a Careys Creek Conservation Area sign.
  • Via SH1 north of Dunedin to Evansdale Glen picnic area, from here follow the walking track, and once past the stile you are in the hunting block.

Hunting is not permitted within Evansdale Glen picnic area.

Know before you go

Dogs

Dogs are allowed in this block with a hunting permit.

  • Dogs must be kept on a lead in Evansdale Glen picnic area as this is a Dunedin City Council reserve.
  • If accessing the block over private land, you must have landholder permission to take your dog.

Wallabies can displace other species, affect pastures and native species' habitats.
They also potentially impact production and native ecosystems.
