Introduction

A permit is required by anyone using a rifle, bow or dog to hunt on land managed by the Department of Conservation.

You need to take a valid hunting permit with you at all times to legally hunt on land managed by DOC.

Some blocks in the Catlins hunting area are open permit blocks and some are restricted permit blocks.

Open permit blocks in Catlins hunting area

The following blocks in Catlins hunting area are open:

  • Catlins-Maclennan (balloted for the ROAR 20 March to 20 April)
  • Tautuku Forest (balloted for the ROAR 20 March to 20 April)
  • Mokoreta
  • Forest Range
  • Waikawa West

An open permit means:

When applying online you will need to give personal details of the hunter, and then select the Catlins hunting area and any others in which you expect to hunt over the next four months.

Restricted permit blocks in Catlins hunting area

The following blocks in Catlins hunting area are restricted:

  • Kaihiku
  • Glenomaru
  • Wisp Range
  • Table Hill Scenic Reserve
  • Pūrākaunui Falls Scenic Reserve
  • Pūrākaunui Bay Scenic Reserve
  • Hinahina Cove Scenic Reserve
  • Tahakopa Bay Scenic Reserve
  • Tautuku Bay Scenic Reserve
  • Waipati Scenic Reserve

A restricted permit means:

  • The permit is issued for a specific hunting block only
  • You need to request the permit from the local DOC office in Owaka
  • You cannot apply online

Your responsibilities

It is your responsibility to:

  • Find out about pesticide use in the area you are hunting in before your trip
  • Comply in full with the conditions under which the hunting permit is issued
  • Comply with each area’s special conditions for hunting and the use of dogs
  • Get permission from any private land owners before you cross their land
  • Ensure you do not hunt on restricted hunting areas unless you have received separate consent from the relevant DOC issuing office
  • Carry a hunting permit with you whenever you go hunting on land managed by DOC
