About this hunting block

General information

The Matakitaki and Glenroy Valleys are both large, open, north-south running valleys. The Matakitaki has a network of maintained DOC huts and tracks. The Glenroy does not have any maintained huts and tracks.

Vegetation is mainly beech forest with the lower slopes dominated by red beech, silver beech and kanuka at sites with poor drainage, and upper slopes by silver and mountain beech grading to pure mountain beech at tree line.

This beech forest ecosystem is transitional from Lake Rotoiti/Travers Valley, which has the drier beech forests of western Marlborough, through to Lake Rotoroa and the Matakitaki where the mixed beech-podocarp forests of North Westland become more prevalent.

The park is steep and rugged and can experience severe weather conditions in any season. Heavy rain will flood rivers that can become dangerous to the unwary. Care needs to be taken at all times.

Red deer can be found throughout in good numbers with animals ranging from valley floor to tussock tops.

Chamois are present and some good horn lengths have been gathered in this area.

Pigs are few, especially in the upper valleys.

Goats can be encountered in the country west of the Nardoo Ridge. Any culling of these animals when encountered would be appreciated.

G & D Thurlow own 144 hectares in the southern end of the valley from E1547759 N5329716 to E1547552 N5326781. The Mid Glenroy Hut is on the private land. Hunting is permitted on the valley floor though care must be taken to avoid shooting cattle. Hunting is not permitted on private land without the owner’s permission.

Access

Access to the Matakitaki Valley proper is through Mt Ella Station. There is a parking area and orientation panel opposite the cow shed.

Follow the orange track markers, putting back up any electric tape gates encountered along the way.

Pushbikes, motorbikes and quad bikes are allowed as far as Downie Hut - no other vehicles are permitted.

Access can be gained to the northern end of the Ella Range via the Mole and Jameson tracks.

The East Branch Glenroy can be accessed through farm land, starting at the East Branch Glenroy bridge.  Please ask permission for access.

Wheelers Creek also gives access to the northern Nardoo area via Brooks Road near the Horse Terrace bridge.

Foot access into the Glenroy is from the end of the Glenroy Road, or through the Rappahannock Valley. The Glenroy Road access is difficult as the adjacent landholder has placed a deer fence with a locked gate at a point where the formed road deviates from the paper road. Vehicle access beyond the locked gate would require permission from the landholder.
