Introduction

The Howard area has moderate deer numbers throughout and the odd pig may be encountered now and then. The occasional chamois has also been spotted passing through.

About this hunting block

General information

The Howard Conservation area is located between State Highway 63 (St Arnaud to Kawatiri) on the east, the Howard Valley Road to the north, and the Muntz Range on the west.

This area is predominantly mixed beech forest with some podocarps present at lower altitudes.

There are moderate deer numbers throughout and the odd pig may be encountered now and then. The occasional chamois has also been spotted passing through.

Access

Public access to the southern end of the block can be gained from the Sabine – Speargrass track which starts at the Mt Robert car park, and also from the Lake Rotoroa track via the Muntz Range.

Landholders

The block is bordered by private land on its northern and eastern sides. It is essential to contact landowners before crossing any private land.

Dogs

Hunting dogs are allowed by permit only for day hunting (not overnight) within the area. Dog permits are available from the local DOC office.

About Teetotal sighting-in range

Teetotal sighting-in range is located off Teetotal Road in the Teetotal Recreation Area approximately 3.3km northwest of St. Arnaud.

Hunters can safely check their rifle sightings at the Teetotal sighting-in range facility before heading into nearby parks and conservation land to hunt.

To use the sighting-in range you must have a Teetotal sighting-in range permit, or be under the supervision of a Range Officer. This is a legal requirement under the Arms Act 1983 from 1 July 2023.
