Glenhope/Big Bush hunting

About this hunting block

General information

Glenhope/Big Bush is an area of conservation land contained within State Highway 6 on the north and west (Korere to Kawatiri Junction), the Korere-Tophouse Road on the east, and State Highway 63 (St Arnaud to Kawatiri) on the south.

This area is predominantly mixed beech forest with manuka/kanuka dominating some of its fringes. Exotic pine forest has been planted up to its boundary in a number of places.

Low to moderate red deer and pig numbers exist in this area. The occasional goat may be encountered on the fringes where conservation land meets private land.

Access

Access can be gained off any of the above highways where the conservation land butts up to them.

Access can also be gained off the Rainy River Road, Higgins Road and Teetotal Road but hunters should approach landowners for permission when this is across private land.

The Teetotal Road provides easy public access to the southern end of the block.

Landholders

There are numerous landowners, both private and forestry, surrounding the whole area.

Dogs

Hunting dogs are allowed by permit only for day hunting (not overnight) within the area.  Dog permits are available from the local DOC office.

Huts

There are no huts in the area.

About Teetotal sighting-in range

Teetotal sighting-in range is located off Teetotal Road in the Teetotal Recreation Area approximately 3.3km northwest of St. Arnaud.

Hunters can safely check their rifle sightings at the Teetotal sighting-in range facility before heading into nearby parks and conservation land to hunt.

To use the sighting-in range you must have a Teetotal sighting-in range permit, or be under the supervision of a Range Officer. This is a legal requirement under the Arms Act 1983 from 1 July 2023.
