About this hunting block
General information
The Wakamarama/Burnett area encompasses the full length of the Wakamarama Range that extends from the Heaphy Track area along the western side of the Aorere Valley.
The mixed beech/podocarp forest has been logged at the lower margins but the intact beech/rata forest offers good travel on spurs. There are few areas of open tussock tops. Limestone bluffs and steep terrain around Mt Haidinger and Mt Burnett make travel difficult and hazardous in parts.
Red deer and feral pigs are present in low numbers throughout with goats becoming more numerous towards the northern parts.
Access
Access to the Wakamarama tops and interior is commonly made from the Aorere Valley side via two tracks:
- The Mt Stevens track starts about 20 km from Collingwood and provides direct access to open tussock areas (3 hours).
- The Kaituna Track bisects the range south of Mt Haidinger and links the Aorere Valley with the Whanganui Inlet to the west (8-9 hours).
The mapped road to Mt Burnett is closed for public access. Direct access to northern and western parts can otherwise be made directly from the Puponga-Anatori road where conservation land is adjacent to the road.
Landholders
The area lies entirely within Kahurangi National Park and Conservation Park with no access constraints. Private land with mixed pasture and forest cover surround much of the area.
Care must be taken to ensure that no hunting occurs in these areas especially where the boundaries are not clearly defined by fences.
