About this hunting block
General information
The Waingaro/Stanley/Devil area encompasses all of the tributaries of the Waingaro River and includes the Snowdon, Devil and Douglas Ranges.
The tops of these ranges have large areas of tussock-land but extensive bluff systems are present which can restrict travel.
The forest consists of mixed podocarp/beech at lower altitudes. Open grassed flats are present at some parts along the Stanley River and particularly around the outlet of Lake Stanley.
Red deer and goats are present in low-moderate numbers throughout. Pigs are present in reasonable numbers especially around, and downstream from the Waingaro Forks area, but are also found in low numbers in the upper reaches of all catchments.
Hunting with dogs is prohibited in the interior parts of the area.
Access
The Waingaro Track starts approximately 16 km south of Takaka and forms a 3-4 day circuit with the Anatoki River track via the Stanley River.
The Waingaro Forks Hut is situated at 6-8 hours walk from the carpark. The headwaters of the Waingaro River can be reached by relatively easy travel along the river from the Waingaro Forks Hut (8-10 hours).
A high-level marked route along the Douglas Range tops links the upper Cobb Valley with Boulder Lake and offers access to the western headwaters of the Waingaro River and Stanley River.
Landholders
The area lies entirely within Kahurangi National Park with no access constraints.
