About this hunting block

General information

Kahurangi Point lighthouse is a popular destination for visitors to this area, particularly during the summer months, although access is affected by tidal and rainfall conditions.

Conservation land includes areas of Kahurangi National Park, Kahurangi Point Scenic Reserve and Conservation Park. The area to the south-west of the Kahurangi Point lighthouse is administered by the Northern West Coast District Office.

The vegetation consists of previously stocked exotic grassland areas at the coastal margins with large areas of duneland. Mixed podocarp, beech and rata/kamahi/nikau forest forms a dense forest cover with thick kiekie cover making travel difficult in parts.

Red deer are present in moderate numbers with feral pigs common throughout the coastal areas.

Access

Access is via the coast only, either by boat or by a low-tide route along the beach.

An unsealed 2WD road extends from the Whanganui Inlet as far as the Anatori River, or further to the Turimawiwi River by a 4WD ford at the Anatori River. 4WD access along the beach further to Big River is possible at low tide.

The coastal walk from the Anatori River to Kahurangi Point must be undertaken at low tide and takes about 4 hours. The Anaweka River and Big River are forded at the river mouths and must not be attempted at high river levels.

For full details on this route contact the Takaka Field Base.

Landholders

All coastal areas south-west as far as the Kahurangi Point lighthouse are private land blocks. Stocked areas extend to Big River. Permission to cross and hunt in these areas must be granted from the landowners.
