About this hunting block

General information

The Anatoki is a large catchment system based on the Anatoki River exiting Kahurangi National Park, approximately 5 km west of Takaka.

The area is enclosed on three sides by the Haupiri, Douglas and Anatoki Ranges with large areas of tussock-land above the treeline. Extensive bluff systems are present along all these ranges which can restrict travel.

The lower river valley area is comprised of mixed podocarp/beech forest with feral pigs present. Red deer and goats are present in low numbers throughout.

Access

The Anatoki Track starts approximately 5 km west of Takaka and follows the Anatoki River to link with the Waingaro Valley track. This is a 3-4 day circuit of the Anatoki River and Waingaro River valleys.

The Anatoki Forks Hut is situated at 6-8 hrs walk from the carpark.

A track leads to Adelaide Tarn Hut on the Douglas Range tops from the Anatoki Forks Hut.

The Haupiri Range tops can be accessed from Boulder Lake. A high-level marked route along the Douglas Range tops links the Cobb Valley with Boulder Lake and offers access to the western headwaters of the Anatoki.

Landholders

The area lies entirely within Kahurangi National Park with no access constraints.
