About this hunting block

General information

The Kaikoura North Coast hunting area is a group of coastal reserves approximately 20 km north or Kaikoura. Blue Duck Scientific Reserve is included in the block. It is steep – the highest point, Patutu, is 1160 metres. It is a mix of forest, mainly regenerating podocarp and manuka, and open grassed areas.

Red deer, pigs, goats and chamois (in low numbers) are found here.

Access

There are 3 main access points with parking areas – at Half Moon Bay, Okiwi Bay and Seaward Valley Road (Blue Duck Valley). Seaward Valley Road crosses private land.

The main track through the reserve is an old 4WD track which is not maintained. This is generally suitable for quad bikes, but can be very muddy and rutted when wet.

Be careful when using this track as it is becoming popular for walking and mountain biking.

Landholders

To cross any private land you need permission from the landholder. We do not have a list of contacts for this area.
