About this hunting block

Location

Venison Tops Hut/Tira Lodge is located in the central Kawekas in the area locally known as Venison Tops.

Access

The alpine tops adjacent to the hut provide access to a number of open grassed creek heads and small clearings. Creek heads are a common feature within the Venison Tops bush edge, and several are situated at the top of grassed gullies. Deer may be seen on the sub-alpine tops during early morning and late evening periods.

More adventurous hunting is available by moving down into the main rivers and streams which have moderate to steep beech forest covered terrain.

From the Ballard Saddle, hunters can access the upper Makino River or the Rocks Ahead catchment. South of the hut the track down to Rocks Ahead offers many hunting opportunities.

Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.

Dogs

Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
