About this hunting block

Location

Studholme Saddle Hut is located on the western side of the main Kaweka Range, south of Kaweka J.

Access

Studholme Saddle Hut is situated at the head of a tributary of Kiwi Creek, 15 minutes walk from Studholme Saddle Bivouac. The area provides access to creek heads that flow steeply down to the river catchments on the western side down to the Donald River and Matauria Ridge, or the eastern side over towards Back Ridge. Deer may be seen on the sub-alpine tops during early morning and late evening. Day hunts are better focussed on the forested creek gullies that flow away from the adjoining open tops. Below the open tops, the higher terrain consists of open scree slopes with pockets of steep mountain beech forest surrounded by open rocky areas and clay pans.

Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.

Dogs

Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
