Introduction

Mount Peel/Waikari Hills area has mountainous terrain, with steep slopes running down to deeply incised gullies. Hunting is open all year for tahr, red deer, chamois and pig.

About this hunting block

General information

This block covers an area of about 3140 hectares. The area has mountainous terrain with incised gullies. Vegetation is mainly tussock with some patches of bush in lower gullies and on south facing slopes. The highest point is Coal Hill at 1617 m.

It adjoins Peel Forest Park Scenic Reserve hunting block.

Access

The block is about 27 km north of Geraldine. Follow Main North Road (SH72) out of Geraldine for 8 km, then turn left just after the Orari Bridge onto the Geraldine Arundel Road. After 3 km, take the second left onto Peel Forest Road and follow this for 13 km to Peel Forest township. 2 km past the township follow Rangitata Gorge Road.

Public access easements up Raules Gully, Boundary Stream or Coal Hill are marked from the Rangitata Gorge Road.

This hunting block is surrounded by private land – do not trespass.
