Introduction

The Mount Dobson hunting block has wallaby, red and fallow deer. Chamois and tahr can be present though in low numbers.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dog access

About this hunting block

General information

Mt Dobson is east of Lake Tekapo and 18 km northwest of Fairlie.

The 2,436 ha block is on the southern side of Mt Dobson. The landscape is tussock grasslands, shrub and mountain totara forest at lower elevations and snow tussock and alpine herb fields at higher elevations.

Note, there is no hunting within the ski field area at any time.

Access

Access is off the Fairlie/Tekapo Highway between Fairlie and Burkes Pass.

Access is across private land and permission must be sought from landowner. A hunting permit does not confer a right of access over any private land. 

The ski field road is a private road. There is no public access.

Helicopter landings may be approved provided a landing permit is obtained.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted on the conservation land, but permission is required from the adjoining land owner to take them on private farm tracks.

Huts

There are no huts or bivvies in the area
