About this hunting block

All year season for fallow deer and wallaby.

General information

The Chetwynd hunting block has moderately-steep slopes and ranges from 500 m altitude at Tramway Stream to 1300 m altitude at the crest of the Albury Range. It is drained by two steeply incised streams, the Tramway Stream and Coal Stream.

Grey scrub and forest are present in the lower valleys and rough gullies, and remnants of broadleaved shrubland and forest still survive on dark faces and around rocky outcrops. Modified short tussock grassland is present on midslopes, grading to snow tussock at about 750 m altitude.

Access

Chetwynd is around 1 km southwest of Fairlie.

From Fairlie head south towards Timaru on the Albury Fairlie Road. After about 6 km turn onto O’Neills Road. At the end of this road turn right onto a 4WD track. Follow the track to the carpark. The easement across farm land starts from here.

Stay safe when crossing rivers

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers, know how to cross safely and be prepared for if you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river is flooded, you cannot find safe entry and exit points or are unsure it’s safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
