About this hunting block

General information

The 430 hectare Dome Forest Conservation Area is a few kilometres north of Warkworth, beside the Dome Valley. It contains steep hill country with dense native bush.

Access

Access is from Waiwhiu-Conical Peak Road across forestry land, or from the car park at the top of the Dome.

Landholders

Landowner permission is not required. However, hunters are requested to be mindful of the tearooms at the top of the Dome and to conceal their rifle when within sight of the tearooms.

Dogs

No dogs, including hunting dogs, are permitted in this reserve.  

Hunting

Goats are generally the only animal hunted in this reserve, although pigs are also occasionally encountered. Animal numbers appear to be low, based on hunting returns.

Shotguns, .22 rifles, four-wheel-drive vehicles, motorbikes, quad bikes, horses and dogs are prohibited on DOC managed reserves where hunting is available in the north Auckland area.

No shooting is allowed within 200 metres of walking tracks.

Additional information

  • Permits issued online for other North Island 'open' hunting areas are not valid for restricted reserves around Warkworth/North Auckland. Hunters must contact the DOC office to apply for a specific restricted permit.
  • Do not visibly carry your rifle within sight of the Dome Tearooms.

Protect kauri when you hunt

Native kauri are under threat from a disease commonly referred to as kauri dieback which can easily spread by soil movement from dirty footwear, animals, equipment and vehicles.
