Game bird hunting in Coastal Otago

You will need a game bird hunting permit to hunt waterfowl on public conservation land in Coastal Otago.

About this hunting block

Coastal Otago has four game bird hunting blocks, three of these are on the greater Taieri Plans area between Mosgiel and Waihola, the fourth is within the coastal Akatore estuary, south of Dunedin. See maps below:

How to get a DOC game bird hunting permit

Email the Dunedin DOC office to request a permit: dunedinoffice@doc.govt.nz 

The following details will be required from you:

  • full name
  • residential address
  • phone number
  • email address
  • your Fish and Game NZ licence number.

Hunting with a dog

If you are hunting with a dog, you will need a dog permit. You'll ned to provide these details about your dog:

  • name
  • breed
  • colour
  • sex
  • current council registration number.

Identify your target

Hunters, you must take care to positively identify your target. During autumn and winter most species in the lagoon are game birds, but there are also protected species who may be there in open game season. You must not shoot these.
