Stay safe while whitebaiting
Whether you're whitebaiting from the shore, in the surf, or on a stand, it's important to stay safe around water.

Before you go

  • Know the area – Do some research, talk to locals, and follow any signs or warnings.
  • Check the weather – If conditions look rough, wait for a better day.
  • Take a friend and tell someone your plans:
    • Always fish with someone who knows the area. Don’t go alone.
    • Let a trusted person know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
    • Ask them to check on you if you’re late, and to call 111 if they’re concerned.

While whitebaiting

  • Carry two waterproof ways to call for help – Keep a mobile phone in a waterproof bag, a VHF radio, or a distress beacon on you. If you end up in the water, you’ll still be able to reach them.
  • Wear a life jacket and wader belt – Whether you're on land or in the water, these can help keep you safe if you fall in or get swept away.
  • Avoid wet rocks – If rocks are wet, waves are likely washing over them. That makes them slippery and dangerous.
