How to buy and use Backcountry Hut Tickets
You can buy tickets from:
- DOC visitor centres, and
- selected Backcountry Hut Ticket retailers.
Buy the required Hut Tickets and take them with you on your trip. Put your tickets into the honesty box at the hut.
Note: you can't pay for bookings with Hut Tickets.
Hut fees
Fees differ for Standard and Serviced huts.

Hut Ticket values
In order to make use of all existing tickets with these fees, we will use the tickets based on their denomination value only, where the colour no longer matters (like bank notes).
Standard Huts
- Adult: $15 per night – use $10 + $5 tickets.
- Child/youth: $7.50 per night – payment rounded down to the $5 ticket will be accepted.
- Multiple adults/youth: payment with tickets that add up to within $5 of the total fee will be accepted.
Serviced Huts
- Where ticket values do not exactly match the total fee required, tickets that add up to within $5 of the total fee will be accepted.
- Note: All Serviced Huts will be bookable before the end of 2026.
Individually priced huts
Use a combination of tickets to make up the required fee. For example:
- For a $35 fee: use 1 x $25 Serviced Hut Ticket and 1 x $10 Standard Hut Ticket (= $35)
- For a $38 fee: use 1 x $25 Serviced Hut ticket and 1 X $12.50 Serviced Hut youth ticket (=$37.50, acceptable payment within $5 of fee)
- For a $45 fee: use 1 x $25 Serviced Hut Ticket and 2 x $10 Standard Hut Tickets (= $45)
