Winchcombe Biv is located on the bush line below Winchcombe Peak. It is on the Neill Winchcombe Circuit route, which links Cone Peak with Mt Hector.
The original bivvy at this site was built in the 1960s by the New Zealand Forest Service. This was replaced in 1984 with a second bivvy, which was then removed four years later.
The current Winchcombe Biv was built in 2021 by volunteers, using a grant from the Backcountry Trust. It is based on the ‘dogbox’ bivvy design, used by the New Zealand Forest Service through the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
Winchcombe Biv is owned by the Backcountry Trust and is maintained by volunteers, under a management agreement with the Department of Conservation.
