This hut is owned and maintained by the Backcountry Trust. It is available for the public to use.
Winchcombe Biv is located on the bush line below Winchcombe Peak. It is on the Neill Winchcombe Circuit route, which links Cone Peak with Mt Hector.
The current Winchcombe Biv was built in 2021 by volunteers, using a grant from the Backcountry Trust. It is based on the ‘dogbox’ bivvy design, used by the New Zealand Forest Service through the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
Winchcombe Biv is owned by the Backcountry Trust and is maintained by volunteers, under a management agreement with DOC.
