Otago Central Rail Trail tunnel

Pack a picnic, grab your bicycles, and set off to explore this very scenic stretch of New Zealand rail history.
  • Admire the Central Otago landscape as you cycle past land rich in native grey shrubland and rugged schist bluffs.
  • As you pass over towering bridges and explore dark tunnels, consider the extreme challenges faced by those who had to build them.  Make sure you bring a torch.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for kārearea – New Zealand’s native falcon.
