With coastal forest, spectacular views and WWII gun emplacements as well - there is plenty to see on this short, easy walk.


  • Enjoy a white sandy beach that's great for swimming.
  • Experience pōhutukawa coastal forest.
  • Visit WWII gun emplacements.
  • Listen to native birds including whitehead/pōpokotea, New Zealand robin/toutouwai, fantail/pīwakawaka, New Zealand pigeon/ kūkupa, gray warbler/ riroriro, pūkeko, paradise shelduck/ pūtangitangi, little blue penguin/kororā and tūī.
  • Explore rock pools.
  • Take a 3 km, 1.5-hour easy walk suitable for families and off-road pushchairs.

Located in the Te Whara/Bream Head Scenic Reserve in the Whangārei Heads Area in the Northland Region, 33.5 km from Whangārei via Whangārei Heads Road and Urquhart’s Bay Road.
