Panitahi, the secondary cone of Taranaki Maunga, was called Fanthams Peak for many years. It was named after Fanny Fantham, the first European woman to climb it in 1887.

In 2025 the traditional name of Panitahi was instated as the official name.

Syme Hut was named after local mountain climbing pioneer Rod Syme.
