Kamahi Forest, Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki.
Kamahi Loop Track

Located in East Egmont area and Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki in the Taranaki region

Discover 'goblin forest' on this short walk.

This short walk is a great introduction to the lush rainforest or 'goblin forest' of the mountain. Discover twisted kamahi trunks covered with ferns and mosses as the track descends to cross bridges over rocky mountain streams. The track then climbs to loop back to exit below the Ngāti Ruanui Stratford Mountain House.

Expect some steps and, after rainfall, some wet areas.

The track begins just above the Ngāti Ruanui Stratford Mountain House, 15 km along Pembroke Road. Turn off SH23 onto Pembroke Road at the northern end of Stratford.

Park opposite the Mountain House in the car park on Pembroke Road.

Toilets are across the road.

The lush rainforest on the mountain's lower slopes is evidence of the park's high rainfall.
