Maketawa Hut Circuit
Located in Egmont National Park and North Egmont area in the Taranaki region

Introduction
This circuit offers fantastic views of Mt Taranaki from the Maketawa Hut - it can be enjoyed as a half day tramp but is also a good overnight tramp for families with children and new trampers.6.5 km loop

There are several unbridged stream crossings on this circuit. They are generally straightforward to cross, but will rise rapidly with heavy rain and may become impassable.
Egmont Road end (North Egmont) to Maketawa Hut via Maketawa Track
Time: 1 hr 30 min
Distance: 3.1 km
This lower track passes through native forest with some steps and small ladders.
Egmont Road end (North Egmont) to Maketawa Hut via Translator Road
Time: 1 hr 15 min
Distance: 3.4 km
This is the higher track to the hut. It follows a gravel 4WD track and offers spectacular views of the mountain.
These tracks starts from the Egmont National Park Visitor Centre at North Egmont.
North Egmont is 29 km south of New Plymouth. Follow SH3 for 13 km, then turn onto Egmont Road and follow this to the end.
Be prepared for changeable weather
Weather on the mountain changes rapidly – you must be well prepared with suitable clothing and equipment for all weather and conditions.
Snow, high rainfall and storm damage can make tracks impassable – many rivers and streams are unbridged.
Check the Egmont National Park weather forecast before you go.
Take care when crossing rivers, especially after heavy rain

Assess them carefully before crossing and if in doubt, stay out.
Expect a backcountry tramping track
This is a typical backcountry tramping track, with uneven surfaces, tree roots and muddy parts. We recommend sturdy footwear with good grip.
