Introduction
Take an easy walk through coastal forest to two beautiful lakes.Find things to do and places to stay Kaihoka Lakes Scenic Reserve
A variety of water fowl can be seen on the lakes.
14 km north of Collingwood, leave Pakawau on Mclure Rd, which becomes Pakawau Bush Rd. Just before Whanganui Inlet, turn right onto Kaihoka Rd and follow this for another 6 km.
The reserve is distinguished by its massed nikau palms, which give a tropical feel. Here and there, dense glades of young matai, kahikatea, cedar and tanekaha indicate that the forest is recovering after past disturbance.
Large carnivorous Powelliphanta snails live in the reserve. Shags, paradise ducks, Canada geese and grey ducks all find shelter there among the raupo (bullrushes) and reeds.
