This is one of nine Great Walk campsites on the Heaphy Track.
It's situated on the edge of Mackay Downs in low forest and has distant views of the Tasman Sea and Heaphy River mouth, 15 km to the west and 750 m below.
All campsites on the Heaphy Track have water from a tap and toilets that are supplied with toilet paper. James Mackay campsite has a flush toilet and also sinks. The campsite has wooden platforms for tent sites.
Campers are not permitted to use hut facilities.
Hut rangers move between nearby huts in the summer. As well as checking campsite bookings, they are able to provide campers with information about the track and weather.
