This 39,200 ha area covers a large part of the Waioeka River catchment, and is an area of outstanding natural value.Find things to do and places to stay Waioeka Conservation Area
The Koranga and Kahunui streams, and the Waioeka River provide opportunities for trout fishing. You'll need a fishing licence from Fish & Game New Zealand.
Access to the Waioeka Conservation Area can be found:
- Off SH2 on Redpath Rd (via Wairata Rd) approx. 40 km from Opotiki
- Moanui Rd (via Te Wera Rd), 87 km from Opotiki
- Koranga Valley Rd
Whio or blue ducks can be found at the headwaters of the Waioeka River and tributaries. New Zealand falcon can also be seen, as well as kākā, kiwi, and other common bush birds including kererū.
