This track continues on from the Nikau Loop Track. It follows the Mangakawa Stream with views of waterfalls and small gorges.
The track is well signposted and marked with orange directional arrows within the reserve.
Closure times
The Mōrere Hot Springs complex closes at 5.45 pm. To make sure you return before the springs close do not access the:
- Ridge Track or Mangakawa Track after 2.45 pm, or
- Nikau Loop track after 4.45 pm.
If you access the tracks via Tunanui Road you must enter and exit on Tunanui Road and stay on the tracks. If you go into the pools complex, you will have to pay the entry fee.
This track is in Mōrere Recreation Reserve, 40 km east of Wairoa and 58 km south of Gisborne.
Access via Mōrere Hot Springs
The main entrance to the Mōrere Recreation Reserve is off SH2 through the Mōrere Hot Springs complex.
Access is available only during opening hours and Mōrere Hot Springs entry fees apply. Ample carparking is available here.

Free public access to tracks only
Alternative public access at any time to walking tracks only is via Tunanui Road. This is around 1 km north of the Mōrere Hot Springs entrance. Entrance to the tracks is about 500 m from SH2. There is no formed carpark at this entrance.
The Mangakawa Track is challenging track suitable for fit walkers. Wear sturdy footwear.
The track has five stream crossings. Fifty metres of the track requires walking/boulder hopping along the stream bed. Access during wet weather may be difficult. If in doubt, check for track conditions at the Mōrere Hot Springs office.
