Take a family-friendly overnight trip to Mangatepopo Hut
It is just 25 minutes’ walk on a well-formed track from Mangatepopo car park to the hut, making it a perfect tramp for many ages and abilities. You can enjoy the incredible landscapes of Mangatepopo Valley from the hut, or on the Soda Springs Walk.
Extend your Tongariro Alpine Crossing experience (late October – 30 April)
Have a gentle walk to Mangatepopo Hut for 25 mins along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track in the afternoon, enjoy the views and stay the night there. Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing the next day. Organise drop offs and pick-ups with one of the local shuttle operators.
Tramp from Whakapapa village to Mangatepopo Hut
This 3-5 hour /9.4 km hike is a taste of backcountry tramping and has great views of Ngauruhoe, Pukekaikiore and Pukeonake. It’s a rough, heavily eroded track that is best suited to experienced trampers.
Return the way you came the next day, or arrange a pick-up from a shuttle at the nearby Mangatepopo car park. Read more about this track in the description section of this webpage.
