We recommend all visitors to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing book in advance of their visit.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing winter conditions

From 1 May to late October the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered a difficult, expert-level hike. The track can be covered with snow and very icy in sections. Temperatures are frequently below freezing, and avalanches may occur.

Alpine skills and equipment, as well as warm and waterproof clothing, are essential to hike the track. See Tongariro Alpine Crossing May – October (winter season) for more information

Tongariro Alpine Crossing is delivered in partnership between DOC and Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro of Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

Bookings are recommended for all visitors using any part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track including:

  • Tongariro Alpine Crossing full and part track users
  • Te Araroa walkers
  • Soda Springs track users
  • Tongariro Northern Circuit day visitors
  • Mangatepopo Hut day visitors.

School groups, tramping clubs and climbers should also book.

There is no cost to book.

Visitors who arrive at the start of the track without a booking will not be penalised. We will not be implementing a cap for the 2023/2024 summer season.

Visitors who have a Tongariro Northern Circuit hut or campsite booking are exempt from booking through this system.
