The history of Mangaturuturu Hut

In 1955, members of the newly formed Whanganui Tramping Club identified a perfect hut site while exploring the Mangaturuturu Valley. This began a long-term project involving fundraising, track cutting, and many working bees.

Building materials were hauled in from Horopito using horses, sledges, and the backs of club members over many weekends. During construction, members camped on site, and once the roof was on and building paper on the sides, they slept inside the hut. The hut officially opened on 5 April 1958, a memorable day for everyone who helped build it.

The hut is still owned by the Whanganui Tramping Club and is jointly managed with DOC for all trampers to enjoy. The club requests users continue to care for the hut and the surrounding area.
