About this track

Description

This is an easy walk on level ground. There are several picnic and fishing spots along the way.

From the eastern end of Whakaipo Bay the track begins at the Mapara Stream bridge. Follow the track markers past the boat ramp and along the lakeshore through regenerating bush. 

At the end of the track there are views over the lake to Karangahape cliffs and the Tongariro National Park volcanoes. Walk a further 5 minutes to view Tahunatara Point.

Return via the same track.

Getting there

Whakaipo Bay Reserve is located 12 km from Taupo, off Mapara Road. The start of the track is clearly sign-posted. 

Know before you go

This track crosses private land leased by the Department from the trustees of the Whakaipo 1D Maori Land Trust. Respect the landowners' wishes and stay on the track.
