Awaroa/Five Mile Bay Reserve was returned to Ngati Tūwharetoa in March 2019 as part of their Treaty Settlement and is currently managed by Post Settlement Governance Entity, Te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Tūwharetoa (TKNT).
The reserve is divided into four land parcels with two administered as reserves. The other two are private land parcels owned by TKNT for which public access is at the discretion of the owners. A section of the Great Lake Pathway runs on the lake shore, between the parcels, on a strip of road reserve managed by Taupo District Council.
During COVID-19 Level 4, local hapū placed a rāhui on the site to prevent vehicles accessing the reserve in its entirety. This rāhui is still in effect.
