Drive time from Christchurch is around 3 hours.

From Lake Taylor the road is a rough 4WD track and that is rarely maintained. High clearance 4WD vehicles are necessary. Experienced drivers with high clearance AWD/SUV vehicles may also be able to access the area in dry conditions.

The weather is changeable and can be extreme. Streams rise rapidly.

The huts were built for and are maintained by groups of families.
