The area is mainly tussockland with some matagouri shrubland on river flats. There are limited areas of scrub and forest (mainly mountain toatoa and mountain tōtara) on montane slopes, and extensive areas of tussockland, and bare rock and scree with scattered specialised plants at higher altitudes.
