Geotechnical assessments of all facilities on Motuora island have identified several areas, located close to the base of a hill, with a heightened risk of shallow landslides or rockfall.

To reduce the risk to visitors, DOC has closed the sole occupancy bach and the northern end of the campsite for the foreseeable future.

The rest of the campground (area between the lamp post and open drain toward the northern end) and toilet block remain open. They are lower risk due to their location further away from the base of the hill.

We are considering future options for the bach, but it will remain closed for the foreseeable future including the upcoming summer.

The closures are a timely and practical measure for safety, with climate change increasing the frequency and intensity of severe weather events.
