Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve grounds 

Outdoor wedding ceremonies and events can be held anywhere on the reserve.

Note that although there is a railing in front of the Mess and vegetation along the cliff, fall heights are dangerous, so children should be well supervised.

The beach below the cliffs, also sitting within the Historic Reserve, is another popular wedding site.

The Officers' Mess

The Officers' Mess is a cafe and bookable function centre. The cafe is open to the public on Sundays for brunch. For more information contact:

Fort Takapuna Recreation Reserve grounds

The Recreation Reserve is a section of the wider reserve that is administered by the Auckland Council. This is the large grassy area that extends from the Officer's Mess to Vauxhall Road and down to Narrow Neck Beach (see the map for further detail).

It is available for weddings and events by contacting the Auckland Council on +64 9 486 8600 ext (43) 7109. There are no fees for weddings on the Auckland Council managed Recreation Reserve.

Other information

There are no public toilets on either the Historic or Recreation reserves. You will have to organise port-a-loos for your event.

The gate at the entry to the driveway is kept locked other than for events. A key (with a $50 refundable bond) is issued for permitted events by pick up from the DOC Mungauika North Head Office, Devonport.

Permit and fees

You will need a permit for your event or wedding.

These are standard charges for holding weddings and other events within the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park.

  • Permit application fee: $100 + GST ($115 GST incl)
  • Site fee: $150 + GST ($172.50 GST incl)
  • Site fee if you intend to set up a marquee: $300 + GST ($345 GST incl), marquee not included

There may also be additional costs for specific sites, and if you need DOC staff assistance to set up your event.

Note: DOC does not hire out marquees. You will need to organise your own marquee and transport it to the island. Contact us for DOC approved suppliers and transport providers.
