SMART online recertification
This online refresher training is available to graduates of the SMART course to revalidate their certification.

SMART is an annual face to face course and remains the only way to initially obtain SMART certification. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

After this, graduates have the choice to attend another face to face course or revalidate by completing the online refresher training.

In this online course, you will be reacquainted with critical information about marine mammals around New Zealand including:

  • How to recognise different marine mammal behaviours and what this means for viewing
  • The legislation put in place to protect them by governing our interactions
  • How to minimize disturbance to marine mammals

Assessment

You will be assessed by:

  • activities throughout the course,
  • a scenario-based assessment within the second module, and
  • a final evaluation at the end.

You need to complete all modules to revalidate your certification.

1. Our Marine Mammals

In this module we will take a look at:

  • New Zealand's marine mammal species and their unique behaviours
  • Our impacts on marine mammals and how you can help reduce these
  • The legislation protecting marine mammals and what that means for you
  • Putting the regulations into practice

2. Good boating practices in action - Marine Mammal Tour

In this module we will follow Dave, a skipper and tour guide, on his journey as he delivers his wildlife tour. Along the way, we will put some of what we have learnt into action.
