Summary
Matiu/Somes Island was used as a temporary refuge in times of war in pre-colonial times. In the first half of the twentieth century it was the site of three defence facilities: internment camps for enemy alliens in both World War I and World War II, a degaussing station (1942-45), and a heavy anti-aircraft artillery battery (1942-44).
