Swingbridge, Roberts Point Track

Image: DOC

Two years after Roberts Point track was rendered impassable by damage from a major flood, the Roberts Point track in the Franz Josef Glacier Valley has reopened.

Date:  20 February 2015

As well as the great views of the glacier from the viewing platform, the rainforest and the fascinating historical features of the track, Roberts Point track now has a spectacular new bridge.

It's definitely worth a look. Just remember, the track can be pretty rough and slippery so you'll need to be fit and good on your feet.

Do NOT try to get to the glacier from the viewpoint, or cross the Waiho River except on the bridge.

Walking the Roberts Point track is an adventure in engineering history, too.

After the new swing bridge, you will also trip the light fantastic on this unique staircase, made of steel supports embedded in the cliff face by hand, by men suspended from the cliff above!

I suggest you take the time to see how they did it - more than 100 years ago.
