Taranaki iwi has declared a rāhui on the Pouākai Range in Te Papa-Kura-O-Taranaki following a fatality this afternoon.

The rāhui is in effect from today, Friday 20 March, until Monday 23 March at 2 pm. It covers all of the Pouākai Range.

The rāhui acknowledges the death and expresses sympathy to the whānau of the deceased. 

It provides time for tapu (sacredness) to dissipate following the fatality allowing time for healing and recovery of the natural elements at place as well as the people - in particular, the grieving whānau. 

Visitors to Pouākai Range are asked to respect the rāhui while it is in place.
